Church of Our Savior, MCC
Our Pastor
Rev. Renwick J. Bell
On June 26, 2005, the congregation of Church of Our Savior, MCC, Boynton Beach voted to call long-time
member and recent Masters of  Divinity degree recipient, Renwick J. Bell to the position of Pastor. Reverend Bell
has faithfully served the church as organist, liturgist, composer, Minister of Celebration, board member, homilist
and deacon over the past thirteen years.  Before that he served as organist at St. Pius X Church in Maryland and
Cure of Ars Church in New York.

He currently serves on the board of South Florida Interfaith Worker Justice in Miami, is active in the Human
Rights Campaign’ Progressive Clergy Coalition here in South Florida, on the West Palm Beach team of Equality
Florida, the Boynton Beach Clergy Association and an active member of the GLBT and Friends Interfaith Clergy
group in Broward County.

Rev. Bell, a member of the congregation since 1992, replaces Rev. Dr. Ana Vargas who had been interim pastor
since August, 2004, when former pastor Tyrone Sweeting left for an assignment in Chattanooga, TN. When
asked about his plans for the future, Bell said, “We are a mission with a church not a church with a mission.
Church becomes an agent for change. In our worship, we gather to praise and thank God for empowering each
other to go out into the world and do what Jesus did. That’s what I think it’s all about.” Church of Our Savior MCC
was founded in 1990 as a planned parish extension of the Sunshine Cathedral MCC in Ft. Lauderdale. It is a
chartered member of the United Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches.

Rev. Renwick Bell, 53, grew up in New York, Washington and New Orleans. He has a degree in psychology from
Loyola University and has recently completed his masters of divinity from Florida Center for Theological Studies
in Miami. Raised as a Roman Catholic, Bell long felt a calling to ministry but was uncomfortable about being gay
in the unwelcoming environment of most mainstream churches. He moved to Florida in 1990 with his life partner
of 19 years, Steven Lowe, and was introduced to Church of Our Savior MCC by a colleague from work. In 2000,
he decided to pursue his life’s dream of ministry in the United Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches,
a place where he felt comfortable about being himself.   The new pastor has pledged to work together with the
congregation and with other faith communities in South Florida to effect change in our community and to make
the positive impact of our voices as the GLBT and Q people known in the political arena. “Church is God’s co-
creating with humanity the activities which will result in social justice and liberation for all of God’s children”.
